Executive Summary & Focus Areas
The 16th Annual International Trade Summit serves as a premier strategic forum for agribusiness executives, equipment manufacturers, exporters, policy leaders, and trade diplomats. The 2026 conference highlights the essential exchange of agricultural commodities, modern farming machinery, processing technologies, and supply chain innovations.

Key Focus Areas:
• U.S. & Ohio Agricultural Equipment Exports: Accelerating the export of Ohio-manufactured tractors, harvesting equipment, grain storage solutions, and precision ag technology to modernize Nigeria’s rapidly expanding agricultural industry.
• Commodity Trade & Bilateral Imports: Expanding direct trade pathways for key U.S. agricultural commodities (such as wheat, corn, and soybeans) to Nigeria, alongside reciprocal import opportunities for high-value Nigerian non-oil agricultural products (including cocoa, sesame, cashew, and spices) entering the U.S. market.
• State & Federal Trade Frameworks: Leveraging U.S. federal trade initiatives and Ohio state export facilitation programs to lower trade barriers, improve market access, and de-risk cross-border agribusiness investments.

Trade Context & Trade Volume Statistics
As Africa’s most populous nation and one of its largest economies, Nigeria continues to be a crucial trade partner for the United States:
• U.S.–Nigeria Trade Volume: Total bilateral goods trade between the United States and Nigeria reached $11.8 billion in 2025, with U.S. goods exports to Nigeria standing at $6.8 billion. Agricultural trade plays a critical role, with U.S. agricultural exports to Nigeria exceeding $620 million annually—led by wheat, coarse grains, ethanol, and consumer-oriented food preparations.
• Ohio’s Economic Impact: As a national leader in agriculture, machinery, and food processing, Ohio exports over $5 billion annually in agricultural commodities and heavy equipment worldwide. Ohio’s ag-tech producers, grain processors, and equipment suppliers are uniquely positioned to serve Nigeria’s growing demand for mechanized farming and food security infrastructure.

Leveraging U.S. Policies & Ohio Trade Programs
The summit will explore strategic trade legislation and state-level incentives designed to maximize commercial success:
• African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA): Utilizing AGOA’s duty-free market access framework to streamline imports of eligible Nigerian agricultural goods into the United States.
• Prosper Africa & USDA FAS Initiatives: Aligning private enterprise with federal trade tools provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Foreign Agricultural Service and Prosper Africa to facilitate trade financing, market access, and business matchmaking.
• Ohio Export Facilitation: Highlighting state resources from the Ohio Department of Development (Global Markets Division) and the Ohio Department of Agriculture, including the IMAGE (International Market Access Grant for Exporters) program, which assists Ohio businesses in expanding their international sales footprint.

2. Economic Scale & Continental Standing
• Macroeconomic Scale: Nigeria historically held the title of Africa’s largest economy. While recent structural economic reforms (currency adjustments and exchange-rate liberalizations) have shifted nominal GDP metrics in foreign currency terms, Nigeria remains a top 3 economy in Africa and Africa’s single largest consumer and domestic market.
• Commercial Hub: Driven by rapid growth in agriculture, fintech, telecommunications, creative industries, and manufacturing, Nigeria serves as the economic centerpiece of West Africa.

3. The Nigerian Diaspora in the United States
• Most Highly Educated Immigrant Group in the U.S.: According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Migration Policy Institute (MPI), Nigerian immigrants consistently rank as the most educated immigrant demographic in the United States.
• Educational Attainment: Over 61% of Nigerian-Americans (aged 25 and older) hold at least a Bachelor’s degree—more than double the rate of the general U.S.-born population (~32%) and total foreign-born population (~31%).
• Advanced Degrees & Key Sectors: A substantial percentage hold Master’s, Doctoral, or professional degrees (MD, JD, PharmD). Nigerian professionals in the U.S. hold leadership roles across STEM, healthcare, engineering, corporate finance, higher education, and technology.

4. Intellectual Property & Knowledge Transfer for Nation Building
The Nigerian diaspora represents an unprecedented engine for knowledge exchange and national development:
• Brain Gain & Knowledge Transfer: Through bilateral organizations, trade summits, joint ventures, and advisory frameworks, diaspora professionals actively transfer expertise in modern agribusiness, renewable energy, medical technology, and governance back to local systems in Nigeria.
• Diaspora Capital & Direct Investment: Beyond sending billions of dollars in personal remittances annually, the diaspora mobilizes institutional capital, venture funding, and commercial partnerships that fund domestic Nigerian startups and infrastructure development.
• Bi-National Trade Catalysts: Organizations like the Nigeria USA Chamber of Commerce (NUSACC) leverage this intellectual and financial capital to build direct economic corridors between U.S. commercial centers (such as Ohio) and state-level economies in Nigeria.
